25 July 2011 What Happens When It Works? Bowling Experiences
Do you know what it is like to want to compete, know how to do something but physically cannot execute? The answer to this dilemma is practice, so we are told. So, you go out and find the time to practice and get after putting together the proper foundation. What happens when it works?? Look at bowling. Timing is key to the whole approach and ball delivery. If you are a league bowler, pulling the ball out of the bag, having your timing down, hitting the marks and executing your shot creates an adrenaline rush and affects your whole team. After toiling down in the 150s to 180s for months, all of a sudden you roll 265 and 671 for the series that night. Even if you have ancient equipment and it is all used up, execution is still the key. Imagine how well you would be doing if you could get some updated equipment. The best thing is you start to sustain it. When things start to go away, you are better able to determine what changed. The shot changes the next week, gets harder to read. Even so, just being able to pick up spares and hit marks creates the opportunity to shoot 600. When things start to come together, do not stop practicing!!! You have got to keep building your repertoire.
18 July 2011 The Results Are In! Tournament Bowling
The USBC National Championships are history. It was a great tournament and the unofficial results are in: The winners are: Singles-Matt Weggen, (826), Team, Turbo 2N1, (3473), Doubles, Chad Reiffer, Brandon Tarabek, (1497), All Events, Matt Weggen, (2268). Speaking as a life long bowler, it must be a blast to post these kinds of scores. Even with the new wonder bowling balls, you still have to deliver the shot. Congratulations to the winners and all those who had a blast participating! See ya in Baton Rouge. Now that the national tournament is complete, it is time to concentrate on the city and state tournaments. We are participating in the city tournament next week. We are bowling on wood lanes that require balls engineered for wood. New balls are engineered to roll on synthetic lanes. It will be interesting to see how we do. Glad I held on to some of my older Columbia balls!!

04 Jul 2011 Where Did My Game Go? Bowling Tips and Advice
One of the big problems bowlers have is being consistent. That is, doing the same thing over and over until it is second nature. What happens when a part of your game changes and you do not know what it is or how to bring it back? Sometimes the frustration is so overwhelming, that you lose all concentration and things go from bad to worse. The fix could be as simple as taking a deep breath and a drink of water. If you are getting tired and start missing, lack of water is the #1 trigger of fatigue. You will find that the fog lifts and your concentration returns.
Sometimes you find that your equipment is worn out and it should be upgraded or at the least, reconditioned.
Another problem could be that your timing has changed. Check the fit of your equipment, check the lanes for right of way and just roll the ball. Just like in practice before the competition began. This is your timing at its best. Think about arm swing and simple follow though. Relax and just let it flow. No trying to help the ball. Unload all the muscles and just go—just go!! This should be a part of your warm-up routine anyway. If not, consider making it a part of your warm-up. Go back to the start and just start over with consistent speed and follow through. Sometimes, stuff happens and what is wrong cannot be fixed during competition. In this case, go with the flow, stay cool, do the best you can and get some practice time to restore your swing and confidence.
